I Am a Twin – by Martina Nicolls

I am a twin — though not by birth,
By a quirk of fate and times of mirth.
Apart one year, one month, a week, a day,
Yet folks still guess – twins they say!

She’s the elder (just a smidge),
A calendar’s tiny privilege!
But I caught up, or so I claim,
In wit, in charm, to be the same.

Matching outfits, head to toe,
Striped or frilled, we'd steal the show.
As we stood smirking, they scratch their head,
"Which one’s which?" — we never said!

We swapped our shoes, we tricked our mates,
Switched our names for boyfriend dates.
Who’s the one wearing denim flares?
“Which one’s which?” – who really cares?

Through childhood scrapes and teenage schemes,
Through wicked plots and wild daydreams,
Through love and loss, through thin and thick,
Through years that flew by super quick.

She plants a garden, lush and grand,
While weeds thrive best beneath my hand.
She paints like magic — what a gift!
My stick figures need a lift.

She wears pearls, all class and grace,
I wear beach beads, leather, and lace.
She can feed an army fast,
I burn my toast – and make it last.

Years have gone – similarities are few,
Red hair, blond hair, brown eyes, blue,.
Not twins – two, born a year apart,
Still two bodies, still one heart.
