Trying to figure out WTF is going on James Murphy offers the following comment on the piece in today’s National which reports that Stephen Flynn has called for nationalisation of the Grangemouth oil refinery (Stephen Flynn calls for Labour to nationalise Grangemouth). I thought the comment worthy of a considered response.
Power is not given. Power is only taken. But the Scottish political elite is too cowardly and self-serving and deferential to Westminster to take the power that is Scotland's by right. They have betrayed Scotland's cause and where they have not betrayed that cause they have failed it. They will continue to fail and/or betray Scotland's cause unless we, the people, act. Unless we act together. Unless we combine for the common purpose of forcing the political parties to adopt a manifesto which commits them to #ScottishUDI. #ScottishUDI is a process by which Scotland's independence will be restored. It is a perfectly legitimate and entirely democratic process. It begins with the kind of defiance to which James Murphy refers. We defy the British state's claimed veto on the exercise of our inalienable right of self-determination. We do this in a way that is more comprehensive and rewarding than merely seizing control of an oil refinery - significant as this may be. Why defy the British state on a comparatively small matter when we can defy them on the matter of the Scottish Parliament's legislative competence in matters relating to the constitution. By "asserting direct civil authority over Grangemouth", we take control of a crucial but relatively tiny part of Scotland's industrial infrastructure. By asserting the Scottish Parliament's authority over the constitution, we take control of all legitimate political authority in Scotland. We decide who decides - in ALL matters and not just the matter of Grangemouth. It is the same defiance in either case. asserting direct civil authority over Grangemouth is the lamb we can be hanged for. Asserting the Scottish Parliament's legislative competence in relation to the constitution is the entire flock of sheep. Defying the British state over Grangemouth might trigger a particular constitutional crisis that could lead to further and more fundamental constitutional crises. Defying the British state's authority over Scotland's constitutional status and settlement is the most fundamental constitutional crisis of all. It is the ultimate crisis to which defiance over Grangemouth MIGHT lead. There is no good argument for not going straight to this decisive confrontation. Continuing timorous dithering and pusillanimous procrastination is costing Scotland dear. The impending closure of our only oil refinery is merely a single example of the relentlessly crippling effect of Westminster rule. There may have been a time when a piecemeal approach to defiance might have been an effective strategy. That is not so now. We must act swiftly, comprehensively, and cleverly if we are to save enough of our infrastructure to make rebuilding our nation possible. It all starts with the defiance embodied in the Manifesto for Independence. But such defiance is a sphincter-loosening anathema to our contentedly complacent political elite. The Manifesto for Independence Petition is intended to both compel and embolden the nominally pro-independence parties and politicians. The target for this petition has been set at 100,000 signatures. It has been set at this level as a token of the need for the independence movement to combine for the common purpose of making the 2026 Scottish Parliament election a turning point in the fight to restore Scotland's independence. The Manifesto for Independence Petition is about taking back our government by taking back some control of the political parties which will for that government. The Manifesto for Independence further commits the Scottish Government to take back our Parliament by asserting its legislative competence in matters relating to the constitution. Having done this, we can then proceed to the proper constitutional referendum which will provide the opportunity to take back our nation. Without the Manifesto for Independence, the next five years will be lost to Scotland's cause in the same way the last decade has been lost. Defiance not compliance!
