Scientists pick up paint brushes and cameras to explore the poetic science of water in a Paris art exhibition. A source of life, a major environmental issue, and the subject of endless inspiration, water is explored in all its multiple forms: rain, ice, rivers, oceans, and more, through paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints. The exhibition “ArplastiX: L’eau” (“ArplastiX: Water”) opens from 22 October to 12 November 2025 at the Galerie du Luxembourg in Paris. The ArplastiX group was founded in 1979 by alumni of the École Polytechnique, a Polytechnic School better known for mathematics and engineering than for art. Yet these scientists and engineers share another calling: the desire to explore creativity as rigorously as they explore equations. Their collective mission is “to create dialogue between science and artistic creation.” In this year’s exhibition, the dialogue takes liquid form. Each artist interprets water through their own lens, as physical matter, metaphor, or movement. As the exhibition notes explain: “The works, imbued with personal sensitivity and stylistic diversity, offer a plural vision of the world. They express each artist’s singular gaze on an element that is at once familiar, poetic, and vital.” With many forms, but one flow, each piece is more than landscape; they represent water as erosion, renewal, fluidity, and life. Water shapes not only mountains and clouds, but imagination itself. This is water seen through microscopes and dreams alike.
