Top 10 Grand National Winners

The Grand National is the most famous steeplechase in the world. The annual contest is a race that is watched by millions each year. Here is a look back through the history books at the most famous winners of the marathon contest.

Noble Yeats (2022)

♥ The perfect end to a remarkable career

In 2022, rider Sam Waley-Cohen became just the second amateur jockey in the history of the Grand National to win this race when he partnered Noble Yeats to victory. The talented chaser is the 8/1 favourite in the racing betting to defend his crown in 2023.

Mon Mome (2009)

At odds of 100/1, Mon Mome caused an upset in the race in 2009. Ridden by Liam Treadwell, and trained by Venetia Williams, the horse showed that every runner in the Grand National has a chance of success. The Hertfordshire-based trainer will be hoping she can prevail again in 2023, and given the form she is in this season, one of her runners could feature in the horse racing tips from Paddy Power. Royal Pagaille looks to be her best chance at Aintree in April.

Lottery (1839)

The very first winner of the Grand National was Lottery in 1839. In many ways, it was a fitting name, as many pundits have described the race as being a lottery over the years, as all 40 runners tend to turn up with strong claims.

Party Politics (1992)

In what was a general election year in the UK in 1992, Party Politics came out on top for trainer Nick Gaselee just five days before the country headed to the ballot boxes.

Corbiere (1983)

Jenny Pitman made history in 1983 by becoming the first female trainer to win the Grand National with Corbiere. Since then, Williams, Sue Smith and Lucinda Russell have all matched that feat.

Don't Push It (2010)

Tony McCoy is generally considered the greatest National Hunt jockey of all time. Before the 2010 Grand National, the 20-time Champion Jockey had yet to win the biggest race of the season. Don't Push It ensured he finally got his hands on the Grand National trophy with his success in the race.

Tiger Roll (2018 and 2019)

With wins in 2018 and 2019, Tiger Roll is one of the most successful Grand National horses in history. The small horse had a fantastic career, with several high-profile victories coming at the Cheltenham Festival too.

Aldaniti (1981)

So good was Aldaniti's triumph in the 1981 Grand National, a film was made on the storyline. The horse was ridden by Bob Champion, a man who had recovered from cancer. Aldaniti also overcome the odds himself just to make it back to a racecourse as he had career-threatening injuries to his knee. The pair were cheered to success as they crossed the line at Aintree in a heart-warming renewal.

Golden Miller (1934)

Golden Miller completed an incredible double in 1934 by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season. No other horse has managed that feat since.

Red Rum (1973, 1974 and 1977)

At the top of the list, Red Rum sits above every other Grand National horse in history. He won the race three times and he also finished second twice (1975 and 1976). He loved the Grand National fences and everything about this race.
The 2023 Grand National takes place on April 15th and it will be the 175th renewal of the race at Aintree.
