Early July sees the emergence of the Small Red-eyed damselfly. I know of one local site for them: the moat at Eltham Palace.
Last week I was doing some butterfly recording on the grounds and having found a female Emperor dragonfly laying eggs in the small pond in the Rose Garden, I went to check out the moat.
To my surprise, as it was still only June, I found 3 damselflies on the lilies on the moat. I was sure that they were Small-red eyed as I have never recorded the similar Red-eyed damselfly here before, but separating Small Red-eyed from Red-eyed is difficult, it can be done with binoculars, but really you need photos to be sure and I didn't have my camera with a telephoto lens. So I went back this week armed with a camera to get my record shots.
The diagnostic difference is that little black x mark on the final segment. In the red-eyed damselfly, this is all blue.
Some good butterflies around as well and my first Ringlets of the year along with Meadow Brown and Red Admiral.
